Registration open for August 12th Virtual ParentCamp ©ParentCamp, 2016-2020, All Rights Reserved
Here is your line-up for Week 15 of Virtual ParentCamp! Make sure you click on the links to get to know our facilitators and all the great resources they bring with them. There are going to be some fantastic discussions this week!
Room 1 – [Strengthen] Technology Series: Parents Play & Explore Google Classroom
We have Sam Kary (@newedtechclass) from The New EdTech Classroom joining us this week. You may have seen his video “How to Use Google Classroom for Parents”. When we asked for input on future sessions, we loudly heard, “we need help in how to use all this technology so we can help our kids!” You asked for it, you got it, Sam will be kicking of our technology series for parents. Sam is a Humanities Middle School teacher, Google for Education Certified Trainer, and National Geographic Certified Educator.
Room 2 – [Strengthen] Parents as Talent Developers (Part 1 of a 2 part series)
Join Dr. Sheilah Jefferson-Isaac (@7dreamkeepers) or as many of us know her as Doc Sheilah and Dr. Brenda Williams Harewood (co-author) (@docbwilliams) of Parents as Talent Developers.
This book give minority parents (African American, Latino) the tools they need to help their children perform much better in school. Kernels are seeds in the plant world. The kernels on an ear of corn are the seeds needed to grow the next generation of corn. We use this term in the sense that each parental practice that we highlight in this book should be viewed as a seed for a child’s academic growth.
Room 3 – [Strengthen] Career Series (Thriving During COVID-19) – Banking: COVID Cash
As we continue our career series room, we crowd sourced which careers are thriving during COVID. One of the top responses was banking. From helping families survive this crisis to helping business navigate loans and the PPP process, many banks are hiring a large number of people. What does it take to get started in this industry? This would be a great room for kids to explore potential careers but also for adults who are looking at making a career change.
Join Julie Davey and Crystal Chittenden from Firth Third Bank to find out how to get started, what all of the potential careers there are in banking (you might be surprised!) and learn what their backgrounds are before they entered the banking industry and how those skills were able to be transferred to help them thrive in their current careers.
Room 4 – [Strengthen] Parents & Teachers Collaborating Virtually to Teach Social-Emotional Learning
COVID-19 is testing all of our mental health’s, both adults and children. Join Sharla Leiberman and learn how Community Circle LA is helping parents, kids and their communities cope.
“Through my personal experience as a volunteer at a local elementary school, I have realized the role that trauma plays in our development, and the need to identify it and move through it to a place of healing. Increasing the awareness of Social Emotional instruction assists trauma-informed educators and parents to see the intersection of Adverse Child Experiences (ACES) and social emotional learning (SEL). Working in tandem, they help us to treat and repair the damage caused by trauma and build a more resilient emotional backbone.”
Room 5 – [Strengthen] Trio Programs Pre-College & College/CTE
Did you know??
Trio programs are Congressional programs slated for low income, potential first generation students. They were created in 1965, there were 3 originally but there are 9 right now. Talent Search begins in 6th grade through 12th. Upward Bound for high school, Student Support Services for college and several others. There are about 700 programs across the United States. The focus is making sure students persist in school and go to college.
Annette Hines (@Appalachianaby), Trio Academic Coordinator for Talent Search at Morehead State University has about 300 students she follows and work with, and their families, especially as they get closer to college she works more with parents/guardians. Getting her kids ready for college was difficult, she does this for a living, so for the average parent and average student they can make a mistake that can cost thousands.
